Hi I’m a product and brand designer from Toronto who recently graduated from York University/Sheridan College Program in Design YSDN. I enjoy examining how design can assist areas of need, simplify problems, and craft smarter and safer experiences. Outside of design, you can find me checking out the latest food craze and places, and scouting out shiba inus on the street.

In Real Life

Summary

Gradshow is a showcase organized by students of York / Sheridan Program in Design reflecting the accomplishments made over the four years of study. We began this project in September of 2018 and finished in April 2019, bringing to an end our time at YSDN. In the creation of our graduation showcase, various teams were created to focused on specific tasks. I was elected as one of the branding executives to lead the branding team of 12 to devise a visual styling and identity for YSDN 2019 graduation showcase.

Final

'In Real Life' is about face-to-face interactions that happen beyond the screen. This brand encourages its audience to experience the grad show in person and to learn attributes about YSDN students that exist outside the digital realm. In Real Life creates an open environment where authentic relationships are made between the graduating class and the public.

Research

As a team, we started by conducting research on what had already been done before; from previous events, showcases, advertisement and marketing schemes. This not only allowed us to develop an overview of what already exists, but allowed us to analyse where these brands were strong, could have been improved, and so forth.

To make sure that everyone was on the same page, down the road, we developed core values that could always be referred back to. If we felt that our work was straying away from our original intentions, all we had to do was refer back to our brand values.

Branding

With our student body being so diverse in focus, styles, and perspectives, it made it difficult to identify and chose one visual style that would represent the whole student body. As a result, we decided to embrace that factor and elevate to the next level.

This years graduation showcase is a copy driven brand identity, focusing on the witty and playful statements that all designers can relate to, industry can understand, and the public can enjoy. Instead of being labeled by others, we took the initiative to label ourselves to help you get to know us better.

Final Product

'In Real Life' is a grad show that focuses on the casual side of designers that is often masked over in comparison to the serious tones that designers can often emit. We are not templates, machines, or generators. IRL showcase shows that we are human designers looking to make a positive impact in work environments.

Conclusion

Taking on the roll of Branding Executive was an wonderful learning opportunity. From leading a team of designers, communicating and presenting in front of large crowds, and becoming more assertive with my design decisions. Seeing the final outcome of the project was truly a rewarding experience.
